Meike Vernooij

A population-based approach

The function of protecting and developing health must rank even above that of restoring it when it is impaired (Hippocrates, c 460-370 B.C.) With these words Meike Vernooij, now senior resident in Radiology at the Erasmus MC, starts her thesis. Meike defended her thesis ‘Imaging of Age-related Brain Changes. A population-based approach’ on March 11, 2009.  Her thesis is based on the Rotterdam Study (ERGO), a large prospective cohort study that started in 1990 in Ommoord, a suburb of Rotterdam, among 10,994, men and women aged 55 and over.

Meike Vernooij and Arfan Ikram explain in a Dutch interview published in the Monitor in 2006.
